The use of GLP-1 receptor agonists for obesity and metabolic disease management has risen rapidly, creating a new set of nutritional and functional challenges. While effective for weight loss, these medications can contribute to reduced appetite, nutrient deficiencies, lean mass loss, and gastrointestinal symptoms. This webinar will equip health professionals in supporting clients using GLP-1s. Practitioners will examine the medications’ physiological effects, nutritional risks, and clinical strategies for symptom relief and muscle preservation. Practitioners will also gain the tools to address client factors such as energy levels, muscle integrity, and hydration.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the benefits and risks of the GLP-1 medications in weight management
- Evaluate the nutritional implications of GLP-1 use, including risks of deficiencies that may impair participation in daily activities
- Integrate evidence-informed dietary strategies to minimize symptoms and support client engagement in meaningful occupations
- Design client-centered recommendations that combine nutrition and exercise to preserve lean mass and support performance across occupations

Chapters & learning objectives

1. The Physical, Physiological, and Psychological Impact of Anti-Obesity Medications
This chapter provides a description of GLP-1 medications and an explanation of the mechanism of action, physiological outcomes, and symptom awareness.

2. Nutritional Insufficiencies and Deficiencies
This chapter will address the impact GLP-1 medications can have on intake, which could result in energy deficit, protein and carbohydrate deficiency, micronutrient inadequacy, and subhydration.

3. Nutritional Strategies for Symptom Relief and Management
Delayed gastric emptying, slower gastric motility, decreased appetite, and constipation can all decrease intake. Adjusting diet to increase fiber, fluid, and nutrient density with minimum volume and timing of food and fluid can help to improve nutritional status and provide symptom relief.

4. Minimizing Lean Mass Loss and Maximizing Muscle Preservation
Some of the weight lost on GLP-1 medications is fat, but muscle can be lost as well. Muscle loss minimization and muscle mass preservation can be addressed by optimizing calories, protein quality and quantity, and distribution over the day, as well as resistance training.

5. Question and Answer Session
In this chapter, we’ll review and answer the questions asked during the webinar.
